What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a professional labor support person that provides informational, emotional and physical support throughout pregnancy, labor and early postpartum. A doula is a consistent source of connection and support during a radical life-changing experience. A doula is part of your birth team working with your partner and medical team focusing on the physical and mental health of you, your baby and your family.

Does birth location matter when hiring a doula?

A doula provides great value to any birth team, regardless of birth location. In a hospital setting, midwives, nurses and other care providers have the primary role of observing and ensuring the health of mom and baby, but do not focus on labor support. Therefore, doula support in the hospital is especially valuable because there may be shift changes during labor. Your doula and partner may be the only constants amongst all the variables. For home births, an extra support person is most always welcomed by the birth team. For first-time moms, the added support during pregnancy and labor helps prepare for and provides greater confidence in achieving a positive birth experience. As a result, many home birth midwives require first-time moms to hire a doula.

Do I really need to take a childbirth education class?

Yes! Educating yourself about the normal processes of pregnancy, birth and postpartum empowers you to make choices that align with your values. A quality childbirth education class will also equip you with tools and resources for coping with labor, supporting your body's own abilities, and navigating any challenges during pregnancy, labor and postpartum.

How does nutrition impact my health and my baby?

What you eat throughout your pregnancy is one of the most impactful things for a healthy pregnancy and baby. The quality, variety and amount of food you eat impacts your energy levels, the extra support your body needs during the pregnancy and baby's growth and development. Knowing what TO eat during pregnancy is just as important, if not more, than what NOT to eat.
