Frequently Asked Questions: Childbirth Classes

Do you offer virtual classes?

Currently, all group childbirth classes are taught LIVE AND VIRTUALLY via Zoom. Classes are designed to encourage participation, discussion and interaction to feel much like an in-person class. Participants are encouraged to connect with one another and the virtual format allows couples to join from all over the Midwest and beyond.

What are the benefits of a live, interactive group childbirth class?

Students really enjoy interacting with other couples in a similar stage of life, sometimes leading to lifelong friendships and support during the early parenting years. Couples are able to discuss various birth options and preferences while small group activities make learning fun and interactive. A live class with an instructor allows students to ask questions in real-time and provides a more enriching and engaging learning environment. A set class time also helps hold couples accountable to focus on birth preparation amongst all of life's other draws for attention.

Why is your childbirth education series 10 weeks long?

The comprehensive series covers so much more than just the essentials of the labor process. Learning the breadth and depth of information related to the foundations of a joyful and healthy pregnancy, birth, and postpartum takes time. Each week builds on the information learned in the weeks prior. Preparing the body and mind for the labor and transition to parenthood also takes time, dedication and practice. Couples discover better connection and communication in their relationships as they go through the class, creating a strong foundation for parenthood. You, your baby, and your family are worth the investment!

Birth Doula Services

My Philosophy

After attending births for over 20 years, my philosophy continues to be one of supporting and optimizing the normal process of pregnancy, labor and postpartum life. Through communication and connection with my clients, I am able to help align their unique qualities and desires with the natural process, while also equipping them to handle the unexpected. I offer continuous support regardless of the challenge or outcome, meeting each client where they are along the journey.

I am also a firm believer in providing support for dads and partners. Their perspective and support of the birthing mother is unique. This requires special attention to enhance their support skills and offer reprieve and emotional support when needed, which ultimately helps reduce fear and enhance enjoyment of their baby's birth.

Frequently Asked Questions: Birth Doula Support

How do you view your role as a doula?

My role as doula begins with our first interaction where I learn about your values and desires for your birth experience. Once we decide we are a good fit, I become your guide as you prepare for your best birth experience. I do this by asking key questions, providing information & resources, and teaching you tools and skills for advocacy, coping and support. My role is also to be the person you can ask any question, while supporting both you and your partner.  During labor, my role is to providing continuous physical, emotional, informational and logistical support as dictated by the type of labor you are experiencing. I not only prepare you for a healthy pregnancy and positive birth experience, but also for a smooth transition into parenthood.

When should we hire you?

As soon as you determine you would like me to join your birth team! Hiring me as your doula earlier in pregnancy allows more time for connection & building rapport, defining birth values & choices, and providing support for anything that comes up during pregnancy. I only take a couple clients per month, so hiring earlier increases the chance I will be available.

Do you offer doula services for your childbirth education students?

Yes, absolutely, if you are within my service area! Providing doula services through your labor and birth and early postpartum is a natural extension of the relationship we begin during chidlbirth education classes.
